SL track coach collects shoes for less fortunate athletes



Through a self-organized public service project, a local assistant track coach is ensuring each participant has proper footwear for the sport.

For the past four years, Jared Bruce has enjoyed helping coach Storm Lake boys track.

"We get new kids out for track every year,With Apple’s ipad smart cover, iPad should be pretty well protected. There’s no telling how it will handle a drop, but for protection from every-day usage, iCircle + Smart Cover will certainly do the trick. and they're a good bunch who work hard," the Buena Vista University senior sports management major said. About three years ago, he took notice of students running in improper or worn-out shoes.

"I was noticing kids in shoes with holes in them," he explained. "Some would even show up in basketball shoes that weighed about eight pounds each, which is not proper gear for a track athlete."

After Shoes for Sports concluded last Friday, 81 pairs of shoes had been collected from Buena Vista University, Brown's Shoe Fit, Alta-Aurelia Community Schools and Storm Lake Community Schools.

"I'm very pleased that I can help athletes who can't afford the new shoes they want or need," Bruce said.

If he remains in the area following graduation, Bruce said he hopes to continue the drive again next year.
