Posh Alipore under CCTV surveillance

Crime graph in the posh locality of Alipore has been on the rise for the past couple of years. While the daughter of a renowned industrialist was allegedly harassed by young men some months back, in June 2011, industrialist SK Birla was stalked by youths on a motorcycle. In a bid to put the rate of crime in check, Alipore residents have installed a hi-tech security system in the locality which became operational on Wednesday.

The initiative was taken by the Alipore Citizens' Forum (ACF) and a smart video management system (SVMS) installed in the area after instances of burglary and stalking rose in number. "The area has become prone to crime. It is not always possible for the government alone to ensure safety for us. The citizens too need to come all out to participate. That is how we initiated this project," said ACF president MK Jalan.

The high end megapixel cameras have been installed at strategic locations as recommended by Kolkata police.

The high-end cameras have features like intelligent video analytics, license plate recognition and detection of traffic rule violation. Therefore, apart from keeping a watch on miscreants, the SVMS will facilitate police in tracking vehicles and nabbing people loitering in restricted areas.

While the system can be managed and operated remotely, the dedicated high-speed overhead optical fibre network instilled with robust features will ensure that the cameras don't get affected in extreme weather conditions like rainfall or storm.

"We have installed 116 cameras in strategic locations. This kind of hi-tech security surveillance system dedicated to a particular locality cannot be found anywhere in the country," said Tarun Jhunjhunwala head (east) Reliance Jio Infocomm.

"This SVMS is a pilot project and it could be replicated in more localities with the help of corporate houses like Reliance through their corporate social responsibility," said urban development minister Firhad Hakim.

In order to ensure better communication between Alipore residents, police and the civic body, ACF also launched its interactive community portal - aliporecitizensforum.com on Wednesday. Voices of residents, interaction with police and the civic body, online shopping and service directory are some of the services that the online portal offers.
