Cameras focus on safe streets

SAFETY and accountability are the two main reasons why Kempsey councillors Anthony Patterson and Lou Kesby want CCTV in Kempsey CBD streets.

Council will apply for a Federal Crime Prevention grant to install the CCTV.

An initial estimate of $160,000 has been provided to install a wireless CCTV network within the Kempsey and West Kempsey CBDs.

Ongoing operational costs are anticipated to be between $50,000 and $60,000 a year (administration and maintenance costs.)

The option is based on the CCTV cameras operating on back to base (to council offices) with all footage being recorded onto a hard drive.

The footage captured is only to be accessed on the request of police monitoring anti-social behaviour.

To implement the scheme council would have to follow NSW government policies and guidelines.

The NSW Police Force supports the CCTV scheme and in a statement to council said: “It is recognised that CCTV can be an effective crime prevention program when it is part of a broader crime prevention and community safety strategy.”
