Courthouse security to be increased
Security will be upgraded at the Madison County Courthouse, but the county board stopped short Tuesday of hiring deputies to check people at the doors.
Madison County Sheriff Vern Hjorth shared some of his research with the Madison County board of commissioners, including costs for items that included an additional metal scanner, new self-locking doors at entrances, wiring and hiring additional deputies to monitor doors during courthouse hours.

Hjorth said the cost to replace the glass doors at the north and south entrances to the courthouses would be $10,778 each. In addition, a key pad system to allow access to employees during off hours would be $2,556 for the north door and $2,999 for the south door.
Wiring for the electronic locks is $1,250 for the doors. And a portable metal detector cost is $3,192.
Hjorth said he believes the portable metal detector is absolutely necessary and he would purchase it regardless what the county board wanted to do on the other items.

The estimated costs to staff each door on a walk-through scanner would take about three deputies to man the two doors, including vacation,Surveillance CCTV Cameras. Klein said originally it was talked about having the employees enter through the south doors and the public enter through the north doors.

Jerry McCallum said he would base his decision in part on Hjorth’s opinions.
Hjorth said he has “feelings in both directions.”
“I honestly believe that we live in a part of the country where the possibility of something happening does exist. The county board voted to replace the doors and install monitoring devices to make them lock electronically, which will cost about $60,100.
