Campaign seeks to 'bag' support for foster care

Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan has functional as well as symbolic goals for the small paper bags it’s distributing this summer in newspapers.

The bags are part of the organization’s 24th annual Brown Bag Campaign in support of foster care, and are being distributed through the Petoskey News-Review and other publications around the region. The campaign has raised more than $224,000 for such needs.

Along with funding support, Child and Family Services is interested in reaching out to people who’d consider becoming foster parents.

Child and Family Services averages about 110 children a day in out-of-home placement, and has served more than 16,000 children in foster care since 1937. Children are placed in foster care because of abuse, neglect, or delinquency, and range in age from newly born to 18 years. While foster care is its largest program, Child and Family Services also has offerings in adoption, intensive family preservation, supervised visitation and exchange, counseling, parenting education, and advocacy.

Aranki noted that Child and Family Services tries to line up foster-care resources in a way that minimizes disruptions for children receiving them.

“It’s real important for us to keep kids in their home communities with foster care,” she said.
