CCTV control rooms could stop providing 24-hour cover to slash costs
CCTV control rooms across North Wales could stop providing a 24-hour service to save cash if plans to slash them from six down to two don’t go ahead.
A regional project drawn up four years ago and costing £2.1 million looked into pooling resources with one operation to be based in Wrexham and another in St Asaph at the police and fire service joint communications centre.
That would mean centres in Gwynedd, Conwy, Anglesey and Flintshire would close and the staff monitoring them reduce from 55 to 34.
But if the plan doesn’t proceed, councils will need to consider how to develop the CCTV function while trimming down costs by £113k – and that includes reducing the hours that the cameras are manned.
Both Conwy and Denbighshire councils this week looked at whether the centralisation of CCTV centre should proceed.
A Denbighshire Council report states: “Regional meetings continue to take place and a decision as to whether the project is to proceed or not is expected soon.”
At a Conwy cabinet meeting on Tuesday councillors decided to wait before deciding whether to back a two centre CCTV scheme until funding is secured.

He said: “There’s a debate between community safety and Big Brother but I don’t think it can be argued against any longer that a CCTV system does bring a sense of security to the community. It helps not only police to solve crimes but also to prevent crimes.” Cllr Edwards, of Rhos on Sea, said most law abiding people agree that if you are not doing anything wrong being seen on CCTV is acceptable.
