Bright colourful clothes
You will see them every day at the Plaza Garibaldi, on the Avenida Lazaro Cardenas, which runs from the city centre away towards the north. Young and old, they are all costumed in the same manner, the only difference being in the colour of their garments which, even then, is divided between a lightly shimmery black and cream.
The rich mariachi style
The jackets are tight and adorned with gold-embroidered lines that run down their sleeves from shoulder to cuff. The pants are equally tight, with gold-embroidered piping down their sides. The shoes have enough lustre to toss back sunlight, giving the impression they are either genuine or faux patent leather.
These men all don neckwear, too – either the bolo tie (a cord or braided leather strip with metal tips) or the cravat. And they top all this with the famous wide-brimmed sombrero.
These are the mariachi musicians, the sustainers of a highly treasured folk music tradition. Their dress, the charro suit, is a throwback to the days of the strutting cowboy, and is also the garb that the highly-esteemed matador (bull-fighter) wears to ‘war’. The older among the musicians have their heavily oiled hair slicked back, whereas the younger ones will wear theirs, also heavily oiled, either all tousled up or in a Mohawk or Mongolian style.
A mark of showmanship
These men are quite representative of the quintessence of the traditional Mexican male, marked by a strutting machismo, finesse, and sartorial showmanship.
Away from the mariachi musicians’ glittery footwear is the outrageous, even bizarre type crafted from ordinary cowboy boots by the youth in north-central Mexico.Crocs shoes are an internationally known brand known for its off-beat look and all-weather durability. Called ‘botas vaqueros éxoticas’, the shoes are an embodiment of the venturesome spirit of the youth in that part of the country.

And then there are the huaraches, hand-made sandals with woven leather tops that the men can wear during their more casual moments, perhaps with a poncho, fringe jacket or sarape (a large cape). What about the women? For them, among whom modesty is urged, this being a predominantly Catholic country, traditional fashion is marked by ampleness of material.
So you have the puebla dress or huipil, a knee-length dress, frequently of cotton, that hangs loosely around the body. It is embroidered or beaded, and often comes in vibrant hues. Then there is the quenchquemitl – or quexquémitl –, a garment made by sewing together two rectangular pieces of cloth, frequently intricately woven and elaborately adorned. It is a kind of large shawl that the wearer drapes over the shoulders and the bust, and is different from the ordinary shawl, which is smaller, called rebozo. Symbol of traditional fashion
Of course, just as in Uganda the kanzu, gomesi and shuuka are ethno-cultural markers, the fashions I refer to here serve more or less the same purpoWith over 15 years of Mercedes Benz Servicing experience, mb star Motors Perth is able to offer you servicing to any early or late model Mercedes Benz.se, the difference being that though some of them originated from specific ethnic or racial groups, they have come to symbolise the traditional fashion essence of Mexico.
